The year 2018 will mark the 25th Anniversary of Snee, Lutche, Helmlinger & Spielberger, P.A.

The current firm’s roots date back to the summer of 1982 when Joe Snee started as a law clerk for the firm of Whitfill, Leaf and Hertsch. In 1983, after partner Cy Whitfill became a Judge of the Circuit Court for Harford County, Snee remained with Leaf, Hertsch and Handy and later Leaf and Hertsch.  After three summers law clerking, Snee passed the Bar examination and was admitted to practice law in January, 1985.  In October 1988, the seven lawyer firm of Leaf and Hertsch merged with the Towson based law firm of Cook, Howard, Downes and Tracy.  The combined firms had 32 lawyers.  Ten short months later, in June of 1989, Cook, Howard, Downes and Tracy merged with Venable, Batjer and Howard, now known as Venable.  The firm went from 32 lawyers to over 300 lawyers.  Joe Snee made partner at Venable on January 1, 1993.  On October 1, 1993, Frank Hertsch, John Gessner, Frank Laws and Joe Snee decided to leave Venable and get back to their roots as a small, general practice firm based on Main Street, Bel Air, Maryland.  It was October 1, 1993 that began the evolution of Hertsch, Gessner, Laws & Snee into today’s firm (25 years later) of Snee, Lutche, Helmlinger & Spielberger, P.A.  In July, 2015, SLH moved from its long-time offices at 11 South Main Street to today’s state-of-the-art law offices at 112 South Main Street.

Steve Lutche joined the firm as a young associate in the Spring of 1994, shortly after the firm separated from Venable, and made partner several years later. Steve arrived from the Law Department of Harford County Government where he worked as an Assistant County Attorney, and prior to that, as a Law Clerk for the Circuit Court for Harford County.

Colleen Helmlinger joined the firm in 2001 after a stint with Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLLP and as Assistant General Counsel of Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company.

Gail Spielberger joined the firm in 2013.  Prior to joining the firm, Gail was a partner at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, LLP and senior in-house counsel for Travelers Insurance Company.  Gail became a shareholder in 2016.

Former Shareholder Kevin J. Mahoney became Governor Larry Hogan’s first judicial appointment on December 1, 2015, naming him as an Associate Judge of the Circuit Court for Harford County.

Laura Bechtel became associated with the firm in August of 2011.  Prior to joining the firm, Laura served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable William O. Carr of the Circuit Court for Harford County.

SLHS, P.A. looks forward to serving its clients over the next 25 years as the firm continues to grow on Main Street in Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland.
