The Second Annual Civics & Law Academy, sponsored by the Harford County Bar Association, was held at Joppatowne High School on April 11, 2014.
SMLH attorneys Kevin Mahoney and Laura Bechtel were among the local volunteers who taught a section of the program to high school students from across the county. The program, designed to coincide with Harford County high schools’ civics and government classes, provides students with the opportunity to select workshops of their choice to attend.
The workshop topics ranged from “12 Supreme Court Cases Every Teen Should Know” to “Free Speech, School Speech, & Protected Speech.” Mahoney and Bechtel chose the timely topic of “Law in the Cyber Age” as their workshop, and engaged students in discussions and debates regarding their social media accounts, college and prospective employer access to social media accounts, the use of cell phones in public schools, and the realties and dangers of data collection by mass marketing firms and the government.
